ゲイのスラング（俗語）

Pride Week, in our opinion, is the best party of the year in Toronto!  For Japanese, seeing such an open gay culture is a real surprise and plenty of fun, but there’s a lot to know!  Gay culture has plenty of slang, many of which are really hentai, but here are some common not-so-hentai terms (But still sexual) you might hear, especially if you have gay friends.  They’re kind of funny too!  Remember, pride is about sexuality and being comfortable with all kinds of it!

tranny/trannies – a general term to describe transgender, transsexual, drag, transvestites, and cross-dressers.

queen – usually short for drag queen, which is a man who dresses as a woman, but it can also be used to describe a gay man who’s very feminine.

rice queen – non-Asian male who likes Asians guys.  Kind of like the gay version of white guys who chase Japanese girls.

bean queen  – non-latin male who likes Latin guys

fag hag – a straight girl who likes hanging out with gay men or is attracted to gay men.  Be careful using the word “fag” (see below).

dyke – a lesbian

bear – a big, hairy gay man who appears very masculine.

butch – a very masculine lesbian, almost looks like a man

bull-dyke – similar to butch

basket – the bulge of men’s genitals seen through clothing

closet queen –  an insult that refers to a currently inactive homosexual or one who denies or suppresses his homosexual feelings.

coming out of the closet – when a person reveals to everyone that he/she is gay or lesbian

buns – butt

bicurious – a straight person who seems to be interested in or open to gay/lesbian activities.

mock bisexual – straight girls who go to night clubs and pretend to be lesbian by dancing close to each other.

fairy/fruit – a gay man

fag/faggot- a gay man.  Though gay men use it a LOT amongst each other, it’s often considered a derogatory term if used by a straight person to describe a gay person  (e.g. “look at that fag over there”).  Homophobics tend to use this word a lot too.  For Japanese, it’s best to avoid saying this word.  Instead, use the word “gay”.

flamer – a flamboyant gay person that’s very obvious to detect.  flaming – adjective form (e.g.  “He’s a flaming homosexual”)

top/bottom –  a term used by homosexuals to indicate whether they like being on top or bottom during sex, meaning who likes to give or take during sex.  For example, “Those guys over there are all bottoms.  I’m a top.”

versatile – a gay man who enjoys being both a top and a bottom.  Also known as a switch.

gaydar – a combination of the words “gay” and “radar”, it refers to one’s ability to detect if someone’s gay or not.

BDSM – short for combining the terms “bondage & discipline” and “sadomasochism”, Japanese know it more commonly as S&M, which is erotic roleplaying that involves control and submission.

threesome – a sexual act involving three people.

orgy – a sexual act involving many people.

twinkie – a young, good looking gay man
